Frequently Asked Questions

What is Scouting about?

The aims of Scouting are to develop character, citizenship, personal fitness, and leadership in boys and girls. The focus of Cub Scouts is to develop these values while having fun, with games, outdoor activities, and service projects that bring the whole family together.

What is the time commitment?

The pack (all scouts grades K through 5) meets once a month, usually on a Saturday, for about an hour and a half. Additionally your scout will meet with his/her den (grade level) once or twice a month for about an hour. There are also two pack campouts and opportunities for other activities hosted by the district and council.

How much does Scouting cost?

We estimate your first year of scouting–including fees, pack dues, and uniform items–will cost about $410. Subsequent years will cost about $280. If you participate in additional events, there could be an additional cost for those. This is a good value when you consider that it covers a year of activities. Financial assistance is available.

Will I have to fundraise?

Our pack sells popcorn to help raise money for our operations and keep the cost of dues lower so more families can participate. We ask that each scout participate by coming to a storefront sale or selling on their own. With better participation we can bring down the cost of dues in future years.

Is Scouting safe?

Safety is a top priority in scouting. All adult leaders are screened through background checks and are required to take youth protection training and practice two-deep leadership to prevent abuse. All activities will be conducted in accordance with the Guide to Safe Scouting to prevent injuries.

What gear do I need?

At a minimum, all scouts will a bag to carry the six outdoor essentials (water, snack, sun protection, whistle, flashlight, first aid kit). For campouts, we have put together a list of recommended items here. The pack has some sleeping bags and tents we can loan you, and other parents may have extras of anything you're missing. Don't feel you need to run out and buy a bunch of stuff. (Unless you want to!)
